Genshin Impact: Racists ridicule developers’ culture

Version 2.4 of “Genshin Impact” with the title “Fleeting Colors” was officially revealed during a live stream on December 26, 2021 – information about the update had previously been leaked to the public. The content could hardly be more contrasting: In the city of Liyue, people celebrate the reconstruction of the jade chamber, which was sacrificed to ward off an enemy god, while in the new region of Enkanomiya, a gloomy ash desert, the Order of the Abyss is making dark plans … Meanwhile, the real events surrounding the live stream were dark and unpleasant.

Opera calls for racists

One of the two new characters in version 2.4, Yun Jin is a Chinese-style opera singer who lives in the China-based Liyue region. This type of music can take some getting used to to Western ears, as “opera” arouses different associations here. In China it is very highly valued culturally.

From the very first glance at Yun Jin’s animations, which reproduce the dancing movements of such performances very precisely and lovingly, it becomes clear that the developers miHoYo have put a lot of passion into the character in order to translate this important cultural asset into the game with dignity.

All playable characters

The lady who dubbed Yun Jin performed a song during the stream, which led to a flood of disrespectful to racist comments and reactions in the live stream, making fun of the performance, thinking it was a joke or a performance in English Chinese demanded. This is not the first time the game’s international audiences have been found toxic when it comes to elements of traditional Chinese culture in Genshin Impact.

The developers will hopefully punish this minority with ignorance, because ignorance is the greatest punishment. The vast majority of fans enjoy the fact that the makers integrate their culture and identity prominently into the world of “Genshin Impact”. Accordingly, the large masses sharply condemned the hateful remarks.

The incident shows once again that racists are the dregs of society and of the gaming community. If you don’t want to see real Chinese culture in a game by Chinese developers, you’re welcome to play something else – and keep any narrow-minded comments to yourself.
