Georg Alexander Duke of Mecklenburg and Hereditary Princess Hande: That is the name of their son
On September 23, 2023, pure happiness moved into the Mecklenburg house: Georg Alexander Duke of Mecklenburg, 32, and Hereditary Princess Hande, 30, have welcomed a son into the world. “This morning at 5:41 a.m., Duchess Hande of Mecklenburg-Strelitz gave birth to a baby boy in Rotterdam. Parents and child are happy, tired and well,” the couple announced via their official Instagram channel. Now, a few days later, the new parents finally reveal the name of their boy.
Her offspring is called Georg Leopold Borwin. His first name is said to be Leopold. Georg Alexander and Hande explain their choice as follows: “Georg is the name traditionally given to the male firstborn of the younger branch of the House of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who descended from the Grand Duke Georg (1779-1860), via his second son Duke Georg (1824- 1876)”, and further: “Leopold commemorates the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I (1640-1705) of the House of Habsburg, who formalized the founding of the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz by imperial decree in 1701. About his great-grandmother Archduchess Ilona of Austria (1927-2011), the little duke is descended from Emperor Leopold in several ways.” Borwin is a Wendish name that is currently carried by the newborn’s grandfather, Duke Borwin, 67, the current head of the House of Mecklenburg. The name Borwin has a long history within the family. It was first awarded to Heinrich Borwin I of Mecklenburg, who died in 1227.
A name with history for the small aristocratic scion. His baptism is expected to take place in spring 2024.

Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel attend the royal celebration
Prince Christian will be 18 years old on October 15, 2023, and the Danish royal will celebrate his coming of age with a big gala dinner.
