The government meets this Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Élysée for its first Council of Ministers, after the summer break. A comeback that will not be easy, especially since a name is in everyone’s mind, that of Gérald Darmanin. This summer, the Minister of the Interior made no secret of his ambitions for the next presidential election.

It’s a comeback that promises to be turbulent. The government meets this Wednesday for its first Council of Ministers at 10 a.m. If Emmanuel Macron wants to make an impression by presenting his “major initiative” to relaunch his five-year term, another challenge awaits the Head of State: Gérald Darmanin. Throughout the summer, the Minister of the Interior, supported by Nicolas Sarkozy in his book The time of battlesdid not hide its ambitions for 2027.

“Division is the best way to weigh down the five-year term”

“Gérald Darmanin is already campaigning”, annoys a minister who considers that Emmanuel Macron must quickly intervene to set limits. “Failing that, all the potential candidates will have to respond and start one after the other,” he analyzes, quoting Bruno Le Maire, Édouard Philippe, Gabriel Attal and François Bayrou. “The division is the best way to weigh down the five-year term but also to fail in 2027”, he concludes.

In the entourage of the head of state, others are much more measured. “To publicly reframe Gérald Darmanin would be counterproductive”, judges a majority executive. “It would highlight it, give it too much importance,” he explains. “We feel hesitation”, recognizes an adviser to the executive who argues that no one really knows what Emmanuel Macron thinks about the rally organized by the boss of Place Beauvau on Sunday in Tourcoing. “Some go so far as to probe the Elysée to find out if they can go there, without having a clear answer”, he specifies.
