Gerard Butler: The king of Sparta becomes the Olympic torchbearer

Gerard Butler (50) is back at the place that once made him a world star thanks to the strip "300": The Scottish actor is currently in the Greek city of Sparta, where he will be honored this Friday as the torchbearer of the Olympics Games to act. On the evening before, Butler was also able to receive an honorary award from the city of Sparta, which was presented to him during a gala. This is reported, among other things, by the British "Daily Mail".

It's no coincidence that Butler is allowed to carry the Olympic flame through Sparta this year. 2020 marks the 2500th anniversary of the famous Battle of Thermopylae, which is said to have taken place 480 BC. According to legend, only 300 Spartans under the leadership of King Leonidas fought heroically against a huge Persian army at the time and were ultimately only defeated by treason. In 2006, Butler slipped into that king of Sparta in Zack Snyder's (54) film "300".

"Titanic" villain Billy Zane is also on site

The Scotsman is not the only celebrity who is allowed to appear as a torchbearer. Actor Billy Zane (54, "Titanic") is currently on Butler's side in Greece. His family once heard the name Zanetakos and comes from there. Zane himself was born in Chicago, Illinois, but is fluent in Greek.

If the corona virus does not thwart the project, the kindled Olympic fire should find its way to Japan. As of now, the Summer Olympics are being held there from July 24th to August 9th.
