Gerhard Zapfl replaced – new master of the water in northern Burgenland

Yesterday, after 20 years, Gerhard Zapfl was replaced as chairman of the Northern Burgenland water supply association. He hands over a model company to Ernst Edelmann.

Gerhard Zapfl has probably experienced more pleasant evenings. At the annual general meeting of the Northern Burgenland water supply association (WLV), the mayor of Wimpassingen, Ernst Edelmann (SPÖ), was commissioned, after the vote of the 70 delegates present, to lead the fortunes of the WLV from now on as chairman. Across all parties, 63 votes went to Edelmann.Zapfl had been suggested by the district chairmen – all SPÖ party colleagues of the 62-year-old – of the districts of Neusiedl am See, Mattersburg and Eisenstadt-Surroundings after 20 years of activity as chairman. The reason According to an insider, Zapfl’s fee is simply due to political geography. Under Governor Hans Niessl, some important public posts were occupied by people from his home district of Neusiedl am See, including the head of Nickelsdorf, Zapfl. Now some decision-makers are to be relocated closer to or in the state capital – Wimpassing is in the district of Eisenstadt-Umwelt.Zapfl offered to contribute his knowledge to the board until retirement in two years – the idea was not approved. So it’s time to draw a line. “I’m proud that I was able to help shape the success story in a model company for over 20 years,” says the ex-chairman, who was responsible for the drinking water supply for 66 member communities, was most recently the boss of 160 employees and for 2023 has estimated the record investment sum of 27 million. 91 percent of the customers gave the WLV a positive testimony in surveys, employee satisfaction was recently higher than ever. Twice in a row, the WLV has been recognized as a best-practice company in Austria.
