German convicted – fake police officer ripped off more than 50,000 euros

The scam involving calls to bona fide victims is currently extremely “fashionable”: A German (31) who posed as a police officer was convicted and has now been sentenced at the Innsbruck regional court – but not only for that.

The defendant was accused of a whole host of frauds. The worst cases were in Reutte in the summer of the previous year. There he persuaded his victim to hand over 52,900 euros in cash. With a currently common scam: The German had pretended to be a police officer and claimed that due to a break-in in the neighborhood there were indications that burglars were breaking into the victim’s house. It would be better to give the money to the police (him!). Also faked debts. In another case, he faked gambling debts and was able to get an acquaintance to transfer 21,400 euros. In addition, the defendant worked as a “locksmith” or as a “fitter” and billed several customers for these services, which were far inflated. Network in Turkey is said to be behind this. Behind this is a “large network in Turkey” for which the defendant worked, as was discussed several times in the process. “You are more of a small cog in the game, but this is also needed,” argued the judge in his verdict. He imposed – already legally binding – 16 months in prison, five of which were unconditional. The German apologized, promised repayments and will soon be released due to a long prison sentence.
