BERLIN (Reuters) – The upturn in German consumer sentiment is set to continue into the new year as government aid measures to blunt soaring energy prices appear to be having an effect, a survey showed on Wednesday. from the GfK Institute.

The index calculated by GfK for the month of January fell from -40.1 (revised) to -37.8 while economists polled by Reuters expected -38.0.

“With this third consecutive advance, consumer confidence is slowly coming out of its trough. The light at the end of the tunnel is getting a little brighter,” said Rolf Bürkl, head of consumer affairs at GfK.

Despite this slight improvement, consumer sentiment is still weak and fell in October to its lowest level in more than ten years, at -42.8.
