Iran on Monday publicly executed by hanging a man convicted of participating in protests that have rocked the country for nearly three months. This is the second execution linked to the dispute.
“We are going to approve a very very tough set of sanctions“said the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell. “Iran must understand that the European Union will strongly condemn these acts and take all possible measures to support young women, peaceful protesters and certainly the rejection of the death penalty.“, did he declare.
According to diplomatic sources, the EU must add 20 people and an Iranian entity to sanction the human rights violations committed in this country during the repression of the demonstrations provoked by the death of a young Iranian Kurd, Mahsa Amini, during her detention by the morality police in September.
The EU will also add eight Iranian individuals and entities to its blacklist of restrictive measures to sanction the supply to Russia of drones used against Ukraine.
An agreement on these two series of measures was reached on Friday by the representatives of the Member States. It must be endorsed by ministers during their meeting on Tuesday.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry said on Friday that its country was showing “the greatest restraint in the face of the riots», in response to the indignant reactions of European countries after the first execution of a man involved in the protest movement.
Iranian authorities reported more than 200 deaths during these demonstrations and arrested thousands of people, among whom 11 were sentenced to death.
