Germany: Industrial orders fell unexpectedly in October

(Updated with details, analysis)

BERLIN, Dec 6 (Reuters) – German industrial orders fell in October, contrary to expectations, falling 3.7% from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis, the Federal Statistics Office said on Wednesday.

Analysts polled by Reuters had forecast a rise of 0.2%, following a rise of 0.7% (revised) in September.

“So far, many companies have compensated for the drop in orders by working on their order books,” said Ralph Solveen, an economist at Commerzbank.

“In the long term, however, they will not be able to avoid reducing production, suggesting that the German economy will continue to contract during the winter months,” he added.

The drop in new orders over the August-October period, less volatile in comparison, was even stronger (-4.6%) compared to the previous three-month period. (Reporting Bartosz Dabrowski, French version Nathan Vifflin, editing by Kate Entringer)
