In the opening sequence of "GNTM", the 31 different candidates had to go straight to the catwalk – in front of a designer legend.

"Germany's next top model" started season 16 with a total of 31 candidates. For show boss Heidi Klum (47), diversity is at the center of this year's search for the next German top model. Therefore, among other things, in 2021: a deaf candidate, a particularly small, an unusually pale and a particularly curvy girl. In the very first episode, she and her competitors had to go on the catwalk – in front of a special star guest.

Heidi Klum threw "the outdated ideal of beauty completely over the top"

"Diversity is very important to me," said Heidi Klum right at the beginning of the premiere episode of "GNTM". In 2021 she "threw the outdated ideal of beauty completely over the heap and gave all girls, big or small, young or old, the chance to introduce themselves to me". One of the girls who made it to the show and has a special story to tell is the deaf Maria (21) from Flensburg. The bookbinder has dreamed of a modeling career since childhood and now wants to use her chance to show the world what it means not to be able to hear.

Soulin (20) from Hamburg, on the other hand, fled the war in her home country Syria and has only been living in Germany for five years. "Your German is better than mine and I was born here," praised Klum. The Syrian woman believes in herself, although many people in Germany have not so far. Modeling is about personality and storytelling, she explained. "I have enough stories to tell."

Just like Chanel from Oer-Erkenschwick. The 20-year-old trainee teacher suffers from Crohn's disease (chronic inflammation of the digestive tract) and has been treated incorrectly for years due to a misdiagnosis. As a result, her arms and one foot are now scarring.

Hot "Magic Mike" performance and Leni Klum as an expert in sign language

For the girls, right at the start of the model competition, there was a baptism of fire in the form of the first catwalk show – and the first meeting with Heidi Klum. However, it got lost on the way to the catwalk and suddenly stood in front of the well-built actors of the show "Magic Mike Live". During the spontaneous performance that followed, the 47-year-old from Bergisch Gladbach was visibly hot. "You will probably be allowed to watch", commented the wife of Tokio Hotel musician Tom Kaulitz (31), who contributed the title song "White Lies" to the TV show with his band.

Klum's eldest daughter Leni (16) was also seen in episode one. While rehearsing for the catwalk, she helped her mother communicate with the deaf Maria. The young model, who is currently traded as Klum's successor at "GNTM", has been learning sign language for two years. You didn't want to "learn any additional language", "like Spanish or something," explained the model mom.

Finest Munich haute couture, stumbling blocks and the first decisions

Then it really started. In the clothes of the Munich designer Irene Luft, the young models should float across the catwalk in front of the self-proclaimed "dream maker" Manfred Thierry Mugler (72). Before that, the Frenchman, who has already worked with stars like David Bowie (1947-2016) or Diana Ross (76), first examined the skills of the models in bathrobes and then asked: "Is there a way that we can see more legs ? " Of course, thought 20-year-old Linda and in short, dropped almost all of her covers. "I love brave girls who want to show what they can do," said Heidi Klum happily.

During the subsequent live walk to the music of DJ Alle Farben (35, "Fading") there were the first stumbling blocks, a lot of uncertainty, but also particularly self-confident performances, which star guest Mugler described as "excellent". In the end, however, only 25 girls were able to move into a brand new model loft and advance one lap. For Franziska (24), Maria-Sophie (19), Vanessa (21), Alexandra (21), Samantha (20) and Lena (21) the dream of "Germany's next top model" ended after one episode.
