(Boursier.com) — Getlink continues the deployment of its preparation plan for the implementation of the Entry/Exit System (EES) – a system of biometric controls that the European Union will introduce at its external borders for third country nationals from the month of October 2024. The group indicates that it has completed construction work on the EES pre-registration building at the French Eurotunnel terminal in Coquelles.

In 2022, Getlink launched a vast investment plan of 80 million euros over 3 years (2022-2024), in order to ensure successful implementation of the European Union EES border system at its two terminals. Coquelles and Folkestone. With the civil engineering work now completed, the installation of the first biometric kiosks has started and will continue until the beginning of May. This is a major step to be ready for the launch of EES on October 6.

This investment plan provides for the modification of existing infrastructure with the creation of individual parking spaces for vehicles, the installation of biometric kiosks and the installation of dynamic signage.

Now complete, the pre-registration area consists of a covered drive-thru area to protect passengers and equipment from climatic variations and is equipped with a video surveillance system. With a surface area of 7,000 m2, it can accommodate up to 60 light vehicles simultaneously. Each parking space will be equipped with two static kiosks to carry out biometric facial and fingerprint checks, which will be required for third-country nationals upon entry into the European Union.
