Getting started with the Samsung Galaxy S24 and S24+: the return of the Exynos

After a Galaxy S23 generation making – almost – no technical distinction between the Ultra model and the S23/S23+, the time for differentiation has returned. Like the Galaxy S22s in 2022, the Galaxy S24s are not all equipped in the same way depending on whether they are marketed in North America or Europe. Understand that if, across the Atlantic, the Galaxy S24 and S24+ are equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, like the Galaxy S24 Ultra, in all countries of sale combined, they are equipped in Europe with an Exynos chip 2400. Although the simple fact that Samsung chooses to reserve certain equipment for specific markets may prove frustrating on the European side, we will have to test the smartphones in the laboratory to determine if we really lose in the change.

A Plus version better off

Because moreover, the Galaxy S24 and S24+ are consistent with what we expected, and very close to their predecessors. They have almost the same measurements and weight (147 x 70 x 7.6 mm and 167 g for the S24 and 158.5 x 75.9 x 7.7 mm and 196 g for the S24+), but, due to the refined edges, the S24 has a 6.2-inch panel, 0.1 inch more than its predecessor. Samsung has also taken care of its copy, by reworking the borders of its smartphone, which are both flat and slightly rounded at the edges: comfort in the hand is increased, and the resemblance with the latest iPhones is even greater. blatant. The manufacturer has also improved points that are now essential in terms of their displays: the panels of the two smartphones are Amoled and LTPO, which gives them the ability to vary their refresh rate between 1 and 120 Hz. Their maximum brightness has been revised upwards, to 2600 cd/m² for both smartphones. Quality printing is present with both terminals.

And to better distinguish itself from the S24, the Galaxy S24+ is entitled, on its 6.7-inch display, to a QHD+ definition. It should be noted that the two screens are protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2, with Gorilla Glass Armor remaining the prerogative of the Ultra model. This is also the case for titanium, the standard versions housing an Armor reinforced aluminum chassis. Let us point out that the S24+ model is entitled to more RAM than the Galaxy S24 (12 GB versus 8 GB): this year, it is this large format model that Samsung seems determined to make shine.

An almost unchanged photo section

For the rest, the two smartphones differ only slightly from the Galaxy S23 and S23+. They thus take over the photo modules (50 megapixel wide-angle module, 12 Mpx ultra-wide-angle module and 10 Mpx telephoto lens) and inherit, it seems, their expertise in image capture. They retain the charging power of their predecessors (25 W for the S24, 45 W for the S24+), but are entitled to a slightly larger battery (4000 and 4900 mAh respectively). It’s a shame that the two smartphones are not entitled to the same treatment, and that neither of them benefits from the wifi 7 available on the Galaxy S24 Ultra; their Exynos 2400 only allows them wifi 6e. This is certainly not a problem today, but the two terminals benefit, like their big brother, from a seven-year update guarantee, wifi 7 will undoubtedly be used before the devices become obsolete…

An update as promising as it is worrying for the Galaxy S23 and S23+, the Galaxy S24 and S24+ more or less retain the launch price. So count on €899 for an S24 8/256 GB (€959 for the S23 at launch) and €969 for its 8/512 GB version. The Galaxy S24+ is announced at €1169 in 12/256 GB and 1289 € in 12/512 GB, or €50 less than its predecessor, then with 8 GB of RAM.
