“Ghostbusters – Frozen Empire”: Now streaming! When will the ghostbusters return to Netflix?

“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” the sequel to the 2021 crowd-pleaser “Ghostbusters: Legacy,” puts even more focus on the original ghost hunters from the 1980s, brings back more old acquaintances, and moves the action back to New York.

Fan service alone is apparently not enough to get viewers excited, most of the reviews of the Ghostbusters’ latest cinema adventure were negative. However, the film was successful enough in cinemas and streaming should now generate additional revenue.

You can rely on Sony

Since Sony Pictures fortunately does not (yet) have its own streaming service, the film studio has agreed with Netflix that film reboots will first be shown on Netflix after their theatrical release before they land on other providers 18 months later.

In the USA, films such as “No Hard Feelings” and “Where the Lie Falls” showed that the Netflix release was expected after 120 days at the latest. In other words: In both cases, the films were available on Netflix exactly four months and one day after their US theatrical release. In the case of “The Equalizer 3” and “Gran Turismo”, it was even a few days or even weeks quicker.

In Germany, Sony releases on Netflix are less regular and slower. You have to wait at least 6 months for a Sony film to land on Netflix, and for “The Equalizer 3” it was almost 7 months. But what does that mean for “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire”?

“Frozen Empire” in midsummer – at least in the USA

At least for the US, it can be predicted that “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” will be released on Netflix no later than July 23, 2024. Depending on how well the film does in theaters, an earlier release would also be possible, but July is considered certain.

In Germany, following the previous logic of Sony releases, it will not be available until September 2024 – at the earliest. We expect a release here at the end of September or the beginning of October. However, those who want to watch “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” at home but not necessarily on Netflix do not have to wait quite as long.

In fact, it is already possible to buy “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” via stream on Amazon or Apple TV, for 15.99 euros or 19.99 euros respectively. But if you don’t want to buy the film and aren’t interested in accessing the Netflix program from the USA via a VPN service in July, you’ll have to wait almost half a year – or just go to the cinema.
