Gilmore Girls: this beloved cozy series was almost called something else

Our favorite cozy series is of course Gilmore Girls, available on Netflix these days. Here is the history of this title… and its few iterations.

It’s a timeless series. Broadcast from 2000 to 2007, Gilmore Girls still remains a popular and intergenerational work today. This, thanks to the cozy atmosphere so comforting in the life of Lorelai Gilmore and her daughter, Rory, around whom other endearing characters revolve like Luke, or the grandparents, Emily and Richard. All this in the small town of Stars Hollow, where autumn seems eternal — except when it snows.

Gilmore almost called itself something else

Why “Gilmore”? The series’ costume designer, Valerie Campbell, told the story in a TikTok video. This name comes from a large American firm: Gilmore Oil, born at the beginning of the 20th century in California, before becoming a service station. The company is also behind The Original Farmers Market in Los Angeles, a large farmers’ produce market.

Why this choice ? In the series, Lorelai’s parents are very rich: the Gilmore family is supposed to have been successful in business, generation after generation. L’easter egg probably allows us to anchor the origins of the Gilmores in reality, by using the name of an American family that was successful in business.

From the start, the series was to have the Gilmores’ name in its title. With one difference: as Scott Patterson (Luke actor) reveals in his podcast, the original title was Gilmore Way (“ in the style of the Gilmores “). Warner wanted to encompass the entire Gilmore family. But the creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino, fought to make it ultimately Gilmore Girls : objective, to make Rory and Lorelai the main focus of the work.

It is clear that even today, Gilmore Girls is mainly seen as the story of a mother and her daughter. The principle is also partly taken up by one of his heirs, Ginny & Georgiaalso on Netflix: even if there are many other characters, including in the Miller family, the title immediately indicates that the mother and daughter are the heroines.

Despite everything, in the original version, several times, the expression “the Gilmore way” is pronounced in the series. During season 4, for example, Lorelai tells her mother that “the family obligations ” are “ the Gilmore way “.

The series was also almost called The Gilmore Girls, before the The is put in the closet for a more fluid title. Here again, this original title ended up finding a small place in the series… or rather in the mini-series serving as a sequel. In Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life (A new Year in VF), the book that Rory writes is entitled The Gilmore Girls.
