Earn money quickly by playing, that’s what Gims says on Anne-Claire Coudray’s microphone in the TF1 news. If you think this is too good to be true, you’re right. This is one of many deepfakes circulating on Facebook.

If you have not subscribed to the paid subscription that Facebook and Instagram offer, you have certainly seen this type of crudely edited and artificial intelligence-doped videos circulating on your news feed, in which Gims extols the merits of a gaming app promising quick and easy money.

This is of course a “deepfake” probably using artificial intelligence to usurp the voice of Anne-Claire Coudray and broadcast invented remarks. It combines extracts of decontextualized images to encourage downloading of the mentioned application. TF1 has confirmed that this sequence of Anne-Claire Coudray’s news is false and was never broadcast on their network. So beware of counterfeits, as the saying goes, because rather than making you earn money, this content only wants one thing, to make you spend money, or even scam you.

Investment in cryptos, gambling apps, celebrities cooked in all sauces

This model, like its codes, is far from being new or isolated. Many stars or public figures have been used without their knowledge in these promotional videos published on social networks.

Examples include Kylian Mbappé promoting a “slot machine” game from a May 2022 interview with manipulated audio, as well as Laurent Delahousse announcing the arrest of Elise Lucet for disclosing a “hidden revenue method by the government” with an audio modification of a France 2 news from May 2019.

Internet users can also fall into the trap of fake interviews on an entertainment show or a major press title. This is how we could be fooled by a false interview with the presenter Alessandra Sublet in the show “Quotidien” presented by Yann Barthès or even the rising comedian of the moment, Redouane Bougheraba in Liberation. In both cases, the publications were attempting to make it appear as though they were censoring their statements regarding a quick and easy money-making tip. Here again, everything is false, and crudely presented.

As for Elon Musk, let’s make no mistake, he has never promoted an online investment platform in a video, which is nothing more than a crude montage of his speech during of an AI summit in 2023.

A long-term campaign of scams and fake news

If these publications use new processes, such as video editing, synthetic voice dubbing or artificial intelligence, the method is not new.

More serious, these campaigns, like “Facebook Hustles” or “Doppleganger”, copy Western media with the aim of spreading fake news, particularly on the conflict in Ukraine.

Other processes usurp verified accounts, NGOs or even government pages, to distribute these deepfakes, always without the knowledge of these accounts or personalities used.

According to Alexandre Alaphilippe,
executive director of the NGO EU Désinfolab, “What is more worrying is that this type of scam has been circulating on Meta for almost ten years now and that it continues to circulate quite easily. Facebook users are not safe on the platform because they can be tricked into giving money to cybercriminals ».

Even if the campaigns to combat disinformation and the dangers of scams of all kinds on social networks are now known to everyone, we must not lose sight of the fact that
the aim of these scams is to push Internet users to register on fraudulent trading sites.

Vigilance is therefore required, because we must not forget, “If it’s free, you’re the product!” »
