At a time when musicals are making a nice comeback in cinema and streaming, the American platform Peacock takes the opposite view by offering an original sitcom that enjoys the world of music with a welcome freshness.
Girls5Eva can count on a heterogeneous and astonishing cast like Sara Bareilles. The singer, discovered in 2007 with her title Love song, was more used to playing songwriters or producers than actresses.
She landed here her first regular role in a production and gave the answer to the brilliant Renée Elise Goldsberry (The Good Wife), who had already shown us the extent of her talent in Hamilton. Girls5Eva allows her to prove that she also masters comedy.
Busy Philipps (who plays Summer) – more extravagant than ever – and Paula Pell (30 Rock) complete this quartet. And yes, quartet because their 5th member played by Ashley Park (Emily in Paris) knows a fate…. funereally funny.
We find in Girls5Eva all the absurdity of a Kimmy Schmidt, both in his ubiquitous situations in his colorful characters but often off the mark. Like Larry, their misogynist agent, or Summer who seems straight out of Real Housewives.
Do not look for finesse in the writing of the songs (it is assumed) but rather in the writing of the jokes which are ultra referenced (sometimes too much for the French public). The showrunneuse Meredith Scardino, who illustrated herself in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, has surely been able to count for this on the advice of the producer Tina Fey, great popess in the world of comedy.
