Google is testing a feature powered by Gemini to summarize emails in Gmail. As it stands, a small button called “ Summarize this email » would be displayed below the title of the message.
About a year ago, the Mountain View firm revealed its plans to compete with Microsoft and deploy generative artificial intelligence (AI) in its numerous productivity software. Since then, the company has gradually deployed technology-powered tools in its products, but remains very cautious about the pace of its launches.
Google, however, has accelerated by unveiling its Gemini extended language model (LLM). Some users, part of the Workspace Labs trusted tester program, can already test its implementation in Gmail. For now, they have access to an email summary function in the browser version of the email. According to the code unearthed in v2024.03.31.621006929, the Android application should also be equipped with it soon.
Revealing code
Android specialist AssembleDebug, who regularly digs into the operating system’s code, was able to take a first look at the future function ” Summarize this email » powered by Gemini. The button, which appears just below the title, does not work at the moment. However, it should work the same way as on desktop, by showing a pop-up window at the bottom of the screen, rather than in the sidebar, with a summary of the email in the form of a bulleted list with the important points highlighted.
Last week, AssembleDebug also managed to enable a feature to get suggested email replies in the Android version of Gmail.
A deeper Gemini implementation in the works?
In addition to the “ Summarize this email “, a Gemini entry in the three-dot drop-down menu of the top bar of Gmail in Android has been spotted. While for now this entry has no defined function, it is likely that eventually it will become the equivalent of Gemini in the Gmail side panel for Workspace Labs users.
No indication of possible new features in the iOS version of the application has yet emerged.
