St. Pauli prevented embarrassing mistakes in the 90th minute

Shortly before the end of the first round of the DFB Cup, the regional league team SV Straelen punished the second division team St. Pauli with a pawn trick goal. Everything points to overtime in a wild game. But then, at the last minute, something very crooked happens. Bochum easily wins in Berlin.

SV Straelen – FC St. Pauli 3: 4 (2: 2)

Second division football team FC St. Pauli only barely avoided embarrassment in the DFB Cup. Coach Timo Schultz’s team narrowly won 4:3 (2:2) at regional league club SV Straelen.

Eric Smith (26′), Jakov Medic (40’/90′) and David Otto (62′) scored the visitors’ goals in Duisburg. Jaron Vicario (19′, 80′) and Amoros Nshimirimana (42′) scored for coach Sunday Oliseh’s team. The 1996 Olympic champion with Nigeria and long-time Bundesliga professional took over Straelen in the summer. Last season’s cup quarter-finalists had big problems with the bold outsider. Hamburg’s defense in particular was anything but solid.

After the change, Otto put St. Pauli on the road to victory, but after a red card against Manolis Saliakas (77th, gross foul play), the favorites had to tremble again in the final phase. Vicario equalized with a clever free kick: With a pawn he took advantage of a blunder by St. Pauli keeper Dennis Smarsch by circling the set piece from the right corner of the penalty area with his left foot directly into the short corner. Smarsch landed the ball in the net.

But that’s not all, a crooked thing follows as the end of a wild game. In the 90th minute, Smith shot a free kick from the left corner of the regional division’s penalty area well over all players. The ball bounced off the far post, bouncing off Medic’s back and happily into the goal in front. A bitter end for the strong playing SV Straelen with coach Oliseh.

Viktoria Berlin – VfL Bochum 0:3 (0:2)

Safe in round two: Bundesliga club VfL Bochum successfully started the new season with a concentrated performance. Coach Thomas Reis’ team won 3-0 (2-0) in the first round of the DFB Cup against Viktoria Berlin, who had been relegated to the third division and effortlessly confirmed their role as favourites.

A week before the Bundesliga opener against FSV Mainz 05, Simon Zoller (18th), Takuma Asano (22nd) and the new centre-forward Philipp Hofmann (65th) scored the goals for VfL in the traditional Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark . The regional league countered with the expected passion, but had no chance against the experienced first division team.

Reis, who started with the new Hofmann, Kevin Stöger, Iwan Ordez and Jannes Horn, dutifully warned his team about the outsider: “They will probably make their game of the season,” he said before the two teams met for the first time about Viktoria and a correspondingly “serious” appearance is required.

Bochum started dominantly against the Berliners, who were only 21.6 years old on average and had been completely renewed after relegation. The Ukrainian Ordez headed just over the bar after a Stöger corner (3′), shortly afterwards Zoller also missed the chance to take the lead (9′). He did better less than ten minutes later: After a nice combination, the striker turned a precise pass from Gerrit Holtmann into the left corner, untenably flat. Completely unchallenged by the Viktoria defense, Asano raised after a direct deposit from Hofmann.

VfL then kept the hosts almost constantly busy with creative combinations, and the Berliners could hardly get out of their own half. Christopher Theisen missed the first good opportunity after a mistake by Ordez (35′). Hofmann missed the early decision with a header after the break, he only hit the post from close range (52nd). Substitute Philipp Förster also narrowly missed the goal (55th).

Bochum became a little more careless after that and let the outsider do more offensively, but keeper Manuel Riemann rarely had to intervene seriously. Hofmann finally made everything clear with his first goal in a competitive game in the VfL jersey.
