Union averts cup shame laboriously late

The outstanding form at the start of the season seems to have been lost: Bayer Leverkusen can be duped by a second division team in the second round of the DFB Cup, despite their home advantage. Union Berlin is only allowed to start late in Mannheim, two more games are also going into overtime.

VfL Bochum – FC Augsburg 5: 4 iE (2: 2, 2: 2, 1: 0)

Bundesliga returnees VfL Bochum continued its upward trend thanks to Manuel Riemann in the DFB Cup. After two league victories in just over a week, the Westphalia made it to the round of 16 with a 5: 4 in a nerve thriller from the point against the troubled league rivals FC Augsburg. The goalkeeper Riemann, who was only substituted in the 119th minute, converted the decisive penalty, previously Augsburg’s Arne Maier had shot over the goal. After regular playing time and extra time it was 2: 2 (2: 2, 1: 0).

Milos Pantovic put VfL in the lead with a double (12th / 53rd). Reece Oxford (55th) and Ruben Vargas (58th) equalized within three minutes. Riemann secured Bochum’s third victory within twelve days as a successful shooter. The autumn is getting more and more uncomfortable for the FCA: After five competitive games in a row without a win, coach Markus Weinzierl also struggles to explain.

Michael Esser, who represented Riemann in the Bochumer Tor, was able to distinguish himself after a few minutes when he defused the Augsburg’s first big chance through Andre Hahn (8th). Two other newcomers ensured the VfL lead in the first successful attack: Pantovic used Konstantinos Stafylidis’ sharp cross to make the somewhat surprising 1-0.

Even after that, Augsburg remained the team with more possession and more fluid combinations, but the Bochum penalty area was mostly over, the last pass did not arrive. The hosts contented themselves more and more with managing the brief leadership. The main relief was the strong Pantovic, who scored from a distance to the supposedly decisive 2-0.

But Augsburg struck back – and Bochum showed nerves, the mistakes piled up. Suddenly the game was open again. VfL was closer to victory in regular time, but Gerrit Holtmann’s shot scratched Jeffrey Gouweleeuw off the line (77th). In extra time, the substitute Michael Gregoritsch failed twice on the other side (96th, 113th).

Bayer Leverkusen – Karlsruher SC 1: 2 (0: 1)

Bayer Leverkusen slipped into a first sporting crisis in just eleven days and only danced at two out of three weddings. The Bundesliga club also retired because of a big mistake by goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky with a 1: 2 (0: 1) surprisingly against second division Karlsruher SC. Bayer has been waiting for a win after a convincing start to the season in four games. Lucas Cueto (4th) shocked Bayer with an early dusting in front of 13,060 spectators. Jeremie Frimpong (54th) equalized for Leverkusen. After a blackout by Captain Hradecky, Kyoung-rok Choi (63rd) let the KSC cheer again after five cup defeats against first division clubs.

The inexplicably weak second half in Cologne, in which Leverkusen had carelessly gambled away a 2-0 lead, was promptly followed by the next blow in the neck for the Rhinelander. Hradecky let a deflected header from Philipp Hofmann ricochet forward, Cueto netted. Leverkusen reacted and equalized twice. Moussa Diaby (10th) and Amine Adli (12th) moved very gently, completely free-standing. Bayer continued to press against a very low-level KSC. Nadiem Amiri also placed a direct decrease next to the goal (19th).

Karlsruhe was waiting for counterattacks, which they received again and again. To the alarm of the Bayer fans, who whistled their Werkself with whistles early on during unimaginative moments during the build-up of the game. These would have become even louder if Hofmann’s artistic side puller had not been deflected by Edmond Tapsoba (29th). After the break, Hradecky prevented the 0: 2 (47th) with his save against a sharply kicked free kick by Marvin Wanitzek. Moments later, Diaby took the song “Try it out with Gemütlichkeit”, which was played in the BayArena at halftime, too literally and allowed KSC captain Jerome Gondorf to counterattack it completely unnecessarily.

Frimpong did a lot better after the conspicuous Adli had a nice reserve. Then Hradecky made another mistake and negligently played the ball into Choi ‘s feet when he failed. Leverkusen then wanted to force extra time, Bravo (78th) missed the greatest chance to equalize one minute after being substituted on.

Waldhof Mannheim – 1. FC Union Berlin 1: 3 (1: 1, 1: 1)

Before the league hit against Bayern Munich, Union Berlin only solved its duty at Waldhof Mannheim in detention. The Bundesliga fifth won after extra time 3: 1 (1: 1, 1: 1) in the third division fifth. Double packer Kevin Behrens (18./118.) And Taiwo Awoniyi (94.) scored for the Köpenicker. The Mannheimers, plagued by internal quarrels, missed a surprise like in the first round despite the lead by Alexander Rossipal (4th). In the summer, Eintracht Frankfurt failed in the Electoral Palatinate.

A few hours before kick-off, the Mannheim team split from their sporting director Jochen Kientz. The association did not provide any precise information about the reasons. Neither “alleged disagreements” between Kientz and managing director Markus Kompp, nor a “birthday party of the sports director” would have led to the decision.

The frenetic Waldhof fans among the 14,651 spectators did not have to wait long for the tour. After a cross from long-time professional Marc Schnatterer from Heidenheim and a weak defense by Union goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow, central defender Rossipal demonstrated his ability to defeat. Even after falling behind, the Berlin team revealed major problems in all team areas. The compensation by Behrens after good preparatory work by Sheraldo Becker and Andreas Voglsammer was the first successful offensive action of the capital city. The hit gave the guests more security. The iron controlled the game until the break, but chances did not jump out.

At the beginning of the second round, the Mannheim team took command again. Led by the strong Frenchman Adrien Lebeau, they were close to the second goal several times. Only after an hour did Union get back on its feet, Waldhof got problems. The lead for Berlin was in the air, the chances increased – the substitute Awoniyi, most recently already very accurate in the league, had the biggest (90 + 2). The beefy striker did better in extra time. After falling behind, the Mannheimers threw everything forward despite dwindling strength – in vain.

Dynamo Dresden – FC St. Pauli 2: 3 nV (2: 2, 0: 0)

FC St. Pauli has made it into the round of 16 for the first time in 16 years. The second division leader won 3: 2 (2: 2, 0: 0) at Dynamo Dresden after extra time and thus continued to fly high. Leart Paqarada (62nd), Max Dittgen (71st) and Christopher Buchtmann (101st) scored the guests’ goals. Christoph Daferner (66th) and Philipp Ziereis (73rd, own goal) meanwhile equalized for the seven-time GDR Cup winner. Dresden was in the last 16 in the 2014/15 season.

A tough encounter developed. Both teams were defensively stable, initially little went forward. There were no chances to score in the first half, the greatest excitement was caused by a pack formation after referee Sven Waschitzki’s half-time whistle. The second round, however, was spectacular. Daferner compensated for the tour of the guests through Paqarada with a direct acceptance test, which is well worth seeing. But Hamburg, who had clearly won the league game against Saxony on October 3rd (3-0), were unimpressed. Dittgen brought the guests back into the lead.

Dresden fought back again after three league defeats in a row without a goal of their own. Ziereis steered a cross into his own goal. After that, both teams looked for the decision, which Burgstaller made in extra time from close range.
