Godzilla x Kong: The New Kingdom was released in theaters on April 3. Directed by Adam Wingard, will the film have a sequel?
Released in theaters on April 3, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire continues to develop the MonsterVerse initiated in 2014 with Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla. After this opus, Michael Dougherty took over on Godzilla II: King of the Monsters before handing over his director’s chair to Jordan Vogt-Roberts on Kong Skull Island.
Adam Wingard then took the helm of Godzilla vs. Kong in 2021. The director returned for The New Empire 3 years later. In the meantime, the Monarch series has also enriched the universe.
After this new titanic clash between these iconic monsters of pop culture, will Adam Wingard start work on a sequel? The artist gave some ideas on this subject in the columns of IGN.
A possible sequel?
“I definitely have some ideas about where the two monsters could go. If this movie is a success, I think the next one will be the Godzilla version of what we did with Kong on that one, pushing it further. history”confides Adam Wingard.
“But Kong’s story is still in its early stages, although I think he is establishing himself as a king, to a certain extent. He will not be a ruler like Skar King , he’s not a dictator. I think it will be very interesting to see how Kong will work with this group and how he will be a leader himself, because I don’t think it will be easy.”adds the director.

According to the filmmaker, this film explores the journey of the titanic ape on his journey to becoming King Kong. “He finally seizes his crown, that’s what the feature film is about”underlines Adam Wingard.
Godzilla and Kong, best enemies?
Indeed, at the end of Godzilla x Kong, the two monsters manage to defeat the big bad Skar King. Kong, who found a people of primates in his image in the Hollow Earth, then becomes their leader. King Kong is born. A sequel exploring the relationship between the giant ape and his peers would be very interesting, especially with Godzilla around.
Furthermore, the gargantuan lizard was only a supporting role in this film; seeing a sequel putting him a little more forward would also be fascinating. We would like to see him join forces with Kong to fight other monstrous threats to Humanity.
A tribe to protect
However, according to ScreenRantwhile Kong has always sought to protect people, he now has an entire tribe that he must protect from any potential threats. “This sets the stage for a sequel, as any Titan or Great Ape that emerges from the Hollow Earth can immediately be seen as a threat to King Kong’s crown and tribe.”observes the media.
“He now has motivation to fight Godzilla again, if the King of the Monsters ever presents himself as a less than trustworthy ally. This will introduce a new relationship between the two unlikely partners that is worth exploring.”
So far, Godzilla x Kong has brought in $200 million in worldwide revenue for a budget of $135 million. The film is off to a very good start and should beat the previous opus, which collected 470 million during the pandemic in 2021. The start of a sequel would therefore be logical if this episode continues to garner greenbacks.
