Golden Globes 2023: Everything Everywhere All At Once and The Banshees of Inisherin lead the nominations

With 8 and 6 nominations respectively, “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “Everything Everywhere All At Once” are the favorites for the next Golden Globes, which will be awarded on January 10.

Awards season is entering its final (long) stretch! The one that will take us to the Oscars, on March 12, and which begins today thanks to the nominations for the Golden Globes, which will be awarded on January 10 by the Hollywood-based foreign press association.

In 2022, The Power of the Dog and West Side Story had triumphed in Drama and Comedy or Musical Comedy, before winning a few golden statuettes. Not Best Picture, which CODA captured during the final sprint, but some of the most coveted, including Best Direction awarded to Jane Campion.

Like last year, Steven Spielberg is still present since The Fabelmans, a fictionalized version of his childhood, won 5 nominations in the Drama category, including those for Best Film, Best Direction or Best Music. Which makes him the favorite in this sector. But not in the number of overall citations, where it is tied with Damien Chazelle’s Babylon, and ahead of Everything Everywhere All At Once (6) and Les Banshees d’Inisherin (8).

But the three feature films compete in the same category (Comedy or Musical), which means that only one of them will win the piece, or that the awards will be diluted between the films, which have in common to be all released in theaters. Of the ten online opuses for the two Best Film trophies, only Glass Onion is intended for a platform (Netflix in this case), even if it went to American cinemas for a limited time, with great success at the key.

Well helped by the COVID and its repercussions on the cinema world, the platforms had taken precedence over the theaters even in the awards ceremonies, and the trend seems to be reversing. This year at least, because streaming represents less than ten of the seventy nominations unveiled this Monday, December 12.

If the French have a chance to be football world champions in a few days, their journey in these 80th Golden Globes is already much more complicated, with only one nomination at stake. And not the one that many were hoping for, namely the participation of Saint Omer in the fight for the prize for Best Foreign Language Film. Even better.

Double rewarded in Venice in September, the feature film by Alice Diop is not one of the five finalists, and it is the usual Alexandre Desplat who saves the furniture thanks to the fourteenth and fifteenth musical quotes of his career at the Golden Globes , both obtained thanks to Pinocchio by Guillermo Del Toro, uploaded on Netflix a few days ago.

French candidate for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, Saint Omer still has every chance, but this first trend is not to his advantage. Contrary to Without filter, Palme d’Or of the last Festival of Cannes which interferes in two major categories: Best Comedy or Musical Comedy, and Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Dolly De Leon.

In the radius of surprises, we note that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is represented by his song and by Angela Bassett, while The Batman is completely absent from the debates (even with regard to music). And that Top Gun: Maverick is nominated for Best Drama while Tom Cruise is absent.

A just reward to underline the theatrical career of the biggest hit of the year… while waiting for Avatar 2, which also won two citations: Best Drama and Best Directing. See you on the night of January 10 to 11 for the results.
