Spotify: this very popular function becomes paid

The practice of making the free version of a service restrictive in order to encourage users to take out their wallets to subscribe is not new. In addition to the growing presence of advertisements, the other lever used by the platforms is to pay for functions that have long been offered free of charge and appreciated by users. Today, it is Spotify which uses this method. More than ever heckled by competition, notably Apple Music or YouTube Music, the platform with 600 million monthly active users (including 236 million in Premium) has in fact decided to move one of its features behind the Premium wall: displaying song lyrics.

Spotify continues to limit its free offer

Spotted by different people in recent days, this choice was confirmed by Spotify at Tech Crunch. No official press release or announcement therefore, the implementation is obviously still partial.

On desktop, the message above is clear. However, user screenshots indicate that testing appears to be underway to only limit the number of times the feature is used with free accounts.

A decision not yet firm?

Spotify therefore still seems to be considering the display of lyrics. At this time, this feature is not listed as a Premium benefit on the subscription pages. Whether the lyrics are partially or totally reserved for Spotify Premium, we can’t imagine free users opting for a subscription for this reason. They could instead look elsewhere in protest and consult the lyrics elsewhere on the Web, where they are easily accessible.
