Golden Globes 2024 nominations: Anatomy of a fall in the race, Barbie and Oppenheimer among the favorites

What are the films nominated for the 81st Golden Globes ceremony, which will be awarded on January 7? Discover the cinema nominations.

Boost for the 2023/2024 awards season. With the nominations for the Golden Globes, we are entering a final long stretch which will lead us to the Oscars, scheduled for the night of March 10 to 11.

Often called “Academy of the Oscars”for the way they give a first real trend on what awaits us a few months later, the Golden Globes will be postponed on the night of January 7 to 8.

An 81st edition which will still distinguish drama and comedy or musical comedy in the main categories, with a new feature: a section where it will be a question of deciding between the biggest hits of the year at the box office, just to give another chance to a few absent.

Barbenheimer: act II

Could it be otherwise? Especially with a ceremony in which everyone can triumph, one being a drama and the other a comedy with musical accents. After having animated the Web ahead of their release, then the world’s cinemas, which they reached the same day, Barbie and Oppenheimer will meet again at the Golden Globes.

With nine nominations, Greta Gerwig’s film (biggest success of the year at the global box office) is the overwhelming favorite. With one citation for Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, and two for its filmmaker (Best Direction and Best Screenplay).

And… three in the Best Song category alone, where “I’m Just Ken” will face hits from Dua Lipa and Billie Eilish. If it is flawless, the feature film will only be able to leave with seven trophies. Which would already be enormous.

As for dramas, it is obviously Oppenheimer who holds the lead with eight nominations. Including three for Christopher Nolan alone (Best Direction, Best Screenplay and Best Film). Seeing him and Barbie rewarded would allow the Golden Globes to be in tune with public tastes, but watch out for the underdogs.

An obviously strange term to designate the new opus of a monument such as Martin Scorsese. But, with 7 nominations, Killers of the Flower Moon presents itself as Oppenheimer’s real challenger.

While Barbie will have to be wary of Poor Creatures (also 7 citations), Golden Lion of the last Venice Festival, carried by a phenomenal Emma Stone, who could well beat Margot Robbie for the prize for interpretation in a Comedy or Musical Comedy.

Four of fall

Last September, The Passion of Dodin Bouffant was chosen to represent France at the Oscars, to the detriment of Anatomy of a Fall. To almost everyone’s surprise, despite the high quality of Tran Ahn Hung’s film.

But the Palme d’Or from the last Cannes Film Festival has been accumulating prizes since then, and today garners four nominations for the Golden Globes. And competes in the Best Drama and Best Screenplay categories, which clearly illustrates the way in which Justine Triet’s feature film appeals across the Atlantic.

It should be noted that Anatomy of a Fall is in the running in the Best Drama and Best Foreign Language Film categories, such as The Zone of Interest (Grand Prix of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival) and the US press darling Past Lives by Celine Song, where the dialogues are in English and Korean.

As for the good surprises, in a set where films released in theaters have largely regained control over productions intended for streaming platforms, Spider-Man – Across the Spider-Verse can do better than its predecessor, which was named only once, compared to three for the new film in the animated saga. But he will be opposed, twice, to The Boy and the Heron by Hayao Miyazaki… for which this is the very first nomination.

Small disappointment, on the other hand, for the enchanting Wonka. The prequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Paul King (Paddington) had everything to invite itself to the party in terms of comedies and musicals, and to join the fight for the Best Music and Best Song trophies. But he has to be content with a very small nomination for Timothée Chalamet, his main performer.

Which, if it imposes itself and seeing things as positively as the Willy Wonka of the film, will allow the feature film to be a hit. Like Cailee Spaeny, the only one nominated for the very beautiful Priscilla by Sofia Coppola, another big absentee. See you on the night of January 7 to 8, on the French side, to discover the results. And identify the first trends in view of the Oscars.
