The Golden Hen was awarded on Friday. There was a moment of surprise on stage for award winner Howard Carpendale.
On Friday evening (October 13th) the Golden Hen was once again awarded in Leipzig. Pop singer and presenter Florian Silbereisen (42) hosted the award ceremony on MDR, which also had some emotional moments.
Howard Carpendale: “That’s how I know you, my son”
Howard Carpendale (77), for example, received the first Golden Hen of the evening after performing his new single “You are the last” as well as his big hits “Ti Amo” and “Hello Again” on stage. The trophy that he received for his life’s work was presented to him by none other than his son Wayne Carpendale (46) – a goosebumps moment. Because the German-South African pop singer obviously didn’t expect that.
“I can say that in 46 years I have never seen my father half-heartedly on stage,” said Wayne Carpendale, visibly moved. “I’ve often been asked what it was like growing up with such a father who was always away – you were never a father, you were just my dad, my best friend. You were and are always there for me.” After a warm hug, father Howard Carpendale then explained: “I can only tell you with all my heart: I knew nothing about it. I wanted to sing three songs here and that was it. The fact that you came for it – that’s how I know you, my son.”
The winners
In addition to Carpendale, the German national ice hockey team (“Sport”), Martina Hill (49, “Comedy”), the biathlete Selina Grotian (19, “Rising Star of the Year”), Udo Lindenberg (77) and Apache 207 (25, ” Music”) and Simone Thomalla (58, “Film & Television”) won the audience categories.
Johannes Oerding (41), Anastacia (55), Alexa Feser (43), Sasha (51), Santiano, Loi (20), Wincent Weiss (30), Michael Schulte (33) and Gregor Meyle provided further musical highlights in the evening (45).
