Good Doctor on TF1: why did Chuku Modu (Jared Kalu) leave the medical series at the start of season 2?

The episode of season 6 of “Good Doctor” broadcast this evening on TF1 is the scene of the return of an emblematic character who left the series at the end of the first episode of season 2.

Since its launch in 2017, Good Doctor has seen its share of departures. One of the most notable being that of Dr. Neil Melendez (Nicholas Gonzalez), whose death still haunts fans of the medical series today.

And if certain actors left the fiction led by Freddie Highmore without any hope of returning, others sometimes made their return to the delight of viewers. This is the case of Chuku Modu.

The man who played Dr. Jared Kalu in the first season of Good Doctor will indeed return to Saint Bonaventure hospital in episode 15 of season 6, broadcast on TF1 this Wednesday, September 27 from 10 p.m.

It was in the first episode of season 1 of Good Doctor that Dr Kalu was introduced alongside Claire Browne (Antonia Thomas). The character played a decisive role for Shaun since he helped the young doctor integrate into Saint Bonaventure hospital.

Kalu actually supported Shaun while Dr. Melendez was very hard on him due to his autism spectrum disorder. He quickly became one of her few friends. Jared, however, got in trouble for punching a doctor who sexually harassed his girlfriend, Claire Brown.

He was quickly fired but sued the hospital for racial discrimination. In the first episode of season 2, however, he accepted a position in Denver, and therefore left the hospital.

Why had Chuku Modu left the show?

Before the broadcast of the first episode of season 2 of Good Doctor, Deadline announced that the writers had chosen to separate from the character of Jared in order to explore other avenues more interesting in their eyes.

It was in an Instagram post, published the evening of the broadcast of the first episode, that the actor said goodbye to the medical series. “There’s nothing but love, love, love, love, that I’m full of,” he wrote. “If only you knew the good vibes and constant energy that is on set when the cameras aren’t rolling. Thank you all for teaching me more than I could ever know.”

Following his departure from Good Doctor, Chuku Modu joined the cast of the post-apocalyptic series The 100 for the last two seasons. He also appeared in Captain Marvel where he played a Kree soldier named Soh-Larr.

It is therefore in episode 15 of season 6 of Good Doctor that the actor makes his comeback. His character arrives at the hospital alongside Roland Barnes, a wealthy businessman injured by a tiger.

The latter’s personal physician, Jared participates in Barnes’ treatment and operation. Thanks to Murphy, he realizes that he misses surgery and he ends up asking to return to the hospital. And good news for fans of the character, Chuku Modu will continue to appear in the rest of season 6.

For the moment, we do not yet know if he will be back in season 7, which has already been ordered by ABC, but whose filming was delayed due to the writers’ and actors’ strike which still paralyze Hollywood today.
