Good news for parents! They will soon no longer need a medical certificate to justify their absence from their employer due to a sick child. Explanations.

Normally, if you are employed and you are absent because your child is sick, your employer can claim from you a medical certificate. But this practice is about to change. Indeed, an amendment was adopted in the Senate during the examination of the proposal for Valletoux law. This measure aims to replace the medical certificate with a simple sworn statement. The benefit of this change is, on the one hand, to facilitate administrative procedures for parents. But above all free up doctors’ time.

Indeed, in this context of shortage of general practitioners, it seems unnecessary to increase the workload of doctors with administrative papers. “Anything that tends to eliminate totally unnecessary paperwork seems to us to be a good thing,” declares doctor Jean-Christophe Nogrette toactu.fr. “It’s useless. These certificates have no added value on a medical level. We use medical authority to certify something that people can certify themselves.”, adds the general practitioner.

And for good reason, the main role of a doctor is to provide care. However, health professionals waste a lot of time completing administrative procedures. And they also find themselves seeing sick children who could easily be treated by their parents. “Parents could very well treat them themselves but request a consultation for precisely have this medical certificate to be given to their employer”, explains Luc Duquesnel, president of the general practitioners section of the Confederation of French Medical Unions (CSMF).

For the moment, the measure has not yet been adopted but is currently in the joint committee. As a reminder, according to article L1225-61 of the public health code, an employee has 3 days of unpaid leave per year, for a child under 16 years old. And 5 days if the child is less than one year old, or if the employee is responsible for three (or more) children under 16 years old.
