A recent change in Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence suggests that it will be usable even on smartphones that are several years old. No need to buy the latest model to benefit from it.
Not so long ago, Google announced Bard with great fanfare, its artificial intelligence wanting to compete ChatGPT. Since then, the chatbot from the Mountain View firm has evolved, so much so that it changed its name at the beginning of 2024 to become Gemini. The idea is simple: integrate AI wherever possible. Logically, we expect it to land on our smartphones, and this will indeed be the case. Except that not everyone will be entitled to the same version.
Google has in fact available Gemini in several forms more or less powerful to, among other things, propose the one that best corresponds to the capabilities of the device responsible for operating the AI. This is how we find, for example, Gemini Nano on the Pixel 8 Pro and on the Pixel 8, although the latter should not have been entitled to it. But whichever one you can claim in theory, there are prerequisites to respectstarting with the Android version.
Google’s Gemini AI would even work on smartphones released years ago
Currently, Gemini app requires Android 12 or higher, which already limits the installation possibilities. According to Statcounter figures, this represents approximately 60% of smartphones in the world. A quiet change spotted by AssembleDebug will, however, expand the potential user base. The last APK (the equivalent of programs in .exe of our Windows PCs) of Gemini numbered 1.0.626720042 indicates in fact thatit supports Android 10 or above.

Still according to Statcounter, we then move to approximately 85% of compatible mobiles. So this is great news for those who want to try Gemini AI on their phone from 2017 or 2018. In the meantime, don’t forget that you can find it in different places: it’s integrated into Messages and arrives even in Google Maps.
