NRW family minister calls for nationwide right to public breastfeeding

Recently there had been several cases in North Rhine-Westphalia in which breastfeeding mothers were undesirable. NRW’s family minister, Josefine Paul, is now campaigning for a nationwide right to breastfeed in public, because time and again mothers in restaurants, outdoor pools or other public places are asked to refrain from breastfeeding or even to “retreat” to the toilet.

In an indoor swimming pool in Essen, for example, a mother was insulted because she was breastfeeding her child. In Oberhausen, a woman was thrown out of a shop. In Mönchengladbach, the property manager prohibited breastfeeding during an owners’ meeting – in this case, that is actually anchored in the house rules. It is part of a child and family-friendly society “that mothers must be able to breastfeed their children in public,” said Paul on Thursday in Düsseldorf.

Legal clarification would give mothers more support. A report by the Bundestag from 2016 makes it clear that breastfeeding in public is generally permissible. However, an innkeeper, for example, can exercise his domiciliary rights.

Completely barrier-free – Deutsche Bahn presents new wagon

While on very old trains you still had to climb quite steep steps to get on the train, newer ones were equipped with at least one or two floor-to-ceiling doors – mostly in the bicycle carriage. Deutsche Bahn is now presenting the first carriage of the new ICE L in Berlin – with level access. Accessibility makes it easier for everyone to get started.

From autumn 2024, trains from the Spanish manufacturer Talgo will gradually strengthen DB’s long-distance fleet, according to a Deutsche Bahn statement. The first are the Intercity and Eurocity trains. The ICE L is pulled by a locomotive that can have different drives. This distinguishes them from the classic ICE, which consists exclusively of electric multiple units. First, the trains are to be used on the Berlin-Amsterdam line.

Children react so sweetly to Ariel from Disney’s live-action adaptation

As early as 2019, when Disney released the cast of the remake of “The Little Mermaid”, negative and even worse racist comments were piling up on the internet. Because: The new Ariel is played by the black actress and singer Halle Bailey. Some Twitter users even tried to use scientific approaches to explain why a mythical creature from a fantasy film could not be black. Now the first trailer of the remake has been released and again there was criticism.

But the negativity and the hate are overwhelmed by the happiness and bright eyes of children who see the trailer for the first time and are thrilled that their favorite Disney princess is black – like themselves. Parents of black children are currently sharing videos with the all over the world reactions of their little ones. In one of the numerous videos, three girls are sitting in front of a laptop when they first see Halle Bailey as Arielle, one of them says: “She is black. Yay!” Others can’t believe it and stare at the screen with big eyes and a huge smile.

It is difficult to trace the extent to which all the videos are spontaneous reactions. Arielle also remains a princess who will most likely meet her prince charming again and give up her old life for love. Which is to be viewed critically, especially from a feminist point of view. But the point here is more about strengthening the representation of Black people in children’s films and hopefully one day giving all children in the world the feeling of being part of this society.
