The gifts offered by GOG.com at the moment are not on par with those of theEpic Games Store, but they are still fun. After Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun and I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream, this is another fairly recent title that can be downloaded for free for 48 hours.
It is X-Morph: Defense, clever mix between shoot and tower defense published in 2017 thanks to EXOR Studios. This original shooter is additionally delivered in Complete Edition with its mini-campaigns European Assault, Survival of the Fittest and Last Bastion, and even his OST in digital format.
X-Morph: Defense Complete Edition
When vertical scrolling shooter meets tower defense. You play as the X-Morph, an alien species determined to steal Earth’s resources. Select the different types of alien towers in the build mode, or jump into battle! Build labyrinths to trap the enemy in a setting with endless strategic possibilities. Destroy buildings and bridges to strengthen your defense, or just for viewing pleasure! Take advantage of a wide choice of alien weapons, and use new defense strategies.
Shooter and tower defense
Your objective is to defend the X-Morph from enemy human waves. Each new wave is preceded by a preparation phase during which the player can check which types of enemies will attack him, and observe their course. This phase is unlimited in time, so the player can carefully prepare their defense, or choose to fight immediately and place towers during the fight if necessary. One of the key features of the game is the ability to build towers almost anywhere on the map, and thus mark the path of the enemy by connecting the towers with each other using laser barriers. The player can choose to build long labyrinths connecting basic towers, or to place advanced towers, which are also more effective depending on the nature of the enemy. Advanced towers specialize according to the type of enemy. So, fire towers are ideal for destroying fast moving ground units, artillery towers for dealing with large groups of slow enemies, and anti-aircraft laser for taking down heavy bombers.
As an X-Morph fighter, you can directly attack enemy units with a variety of weapons. You have the option of taking four different forms depending on the nature of the threat. Each form has a basic attack and a special charged attack mode. Plasma, the most prevalent form, is effective in destroying air and ground units. Dark Matter Bomber is perfect for wiping out groups of ground units. It can also slow down time and launch dark matter bombs capable of destroying buildings. Shredder specializes in the annihilation of large groups of human air units, and clears the way in the sky. Finally, Laser is ideal for melting large individual units. It is also capable of charging a gravitational anomaly that engulfs smaller enemy units. The diversity of weapons and enemies, as well as the dynamism of a fully destructible setting provide a unique arcade shooter experience.
Destructible decorations
Particular care has been taken in the game’s backgrounds, which are almost completely destructible. Tiny fences, huge skyscrapers, bridges and buildings can be destroyed by reproducing the real effects of physics. Destruction not only has a visual effect, it can also significantly change the nature of the battlefield. The combination of dynamic sets, laser barriers and real-time calculation of enemy paths, allows for new game scenarios.
Human mecha
Human beings are desperate to defend their territory. To do this, they created mechanical war machines the size of buildings to fight against each other, and now they plan to use them to take down the X-Morphs. Each boss fight is unique and dramatically changes the game environment. Entire towns are at risk of being wiped off the map.
Split screen co-op
X-Morph: Defense features a split-screen co-op mode. All missions have a different storyline designed specifically for co-op play. Enemies attack in numbers and from various directions, and cooperation is key to winning. In this mode, different configurations are possible: one player can focus on optimizing the placement of towers, while the other shoots at the enemy, or both players can focus their shots on the toughest enemies.
