Google announces (prematurely) its Pixel 8a, an ambitious mid-range mobile

Google spoils a surprise… which wasn’t really one. During a technical discussion, the firm confirmed the existence of Pixel 8athe mid-range mobile which could arrive within a few weeks.

Google is on the right track with its Pixel mobiles and the company intends to capitalize on this. After the exciting Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, the search giant will return to the attack very soon with its Pixel 8a. If the phone had been the subject of many rumors until then, it was more or less made official by Google, without fanfare.

A phone that is already almost official

On the technical discussion forums dedicated to beta versions of Android 14, a Google employee wrote in black and white that a certain feature (namely battery health) would be “ exclusive to Pixel 8a and subsequent mobiles » while the mobile is technically not even announced yet.

Beyond the strange choice of reserving the exclusivity of this feature in the future for its mid-range mobile, this is the first “official” confirmation that the Pixel 8a is indeed in the pipeline. Nothing very surprising there, that said, the phone has already made the rounds of the web three times with the numerous rumors and leaks that have surrounded it for several months now.

If the phone already appeared in Google’s roadmap from 2022, it was a few months later that the phone began to make headlines with the first design renderings. The phone, known at the time under the code name “Akita”, appears to be strongly inspired by the Pixel 8, both aesthetically and technically since it would, a priori, have the same processor and the same graphics chip. and the same amount of RAM.

A price close to €600?

At the start of 2024, a photo of the mobile box told us that the mobile would support the charging protocolPower Deliveryand a few days ago German resellers also published premature information telling us that the mobile could have 128 or 256 GB of RAM and sell from €569. Enough to disappoint fans of the range, the Pixel 7a having managed to keep its price below €500 at the time.

The only information that is not yet completely clear concerns its release date, but if Google’s habits do not change, we should see it arrive (like all models in the same range) by May. Google’s secrets are definitely still poorly kept.
