By adding such a string to his bow, Google Chrome may well manage to convince some users to return to its browser.
Google Chrome for Windows 11, Windows 10, macOS and ChromeOS is adorned with a handy screenshot tool, hidden in the interface’s share button.
A promising screenshot tool
This allows you to define the exact capture area and copy the image obtained to the clipboard to paste it later. So far, it’s not very original: Microsoft Edge already offers this kind of functionality natively, for example.
But Chrome goes further. Once the screenshot is taken, the image editor opens in a new tab, which offers many editing options. It is possible to add text and emojis, to circle or underline, to crop, to select specific areas of the image, and there is even a brush tool available.
For being a simple in-browser default image editor, the result is quite impressive. We can even bet that this new feature replaces in some Chrome users the screenshot of their operating system.
How to test Chrome’s screenshot tool
The development of this tool started in 2021 and is not yet complete. It is therefore not available on the stable version of Chrome and should not be for several more months. But for the most impatient, there is a solution to get your hands on the tool now.
This requires downloading Chrome Canary (the developer version) or Chromium (an open-source browser that serves as a working base for Chrome and other browsers like Vivaldi, Brave, Opera or Edge). In chrome://flags (accessible from the URL bar), you must activate both flags Desktop Screenshots and Desktop Screenshots Edit Mode. Relaunch the browser and you’re done.
As stated earlier, the tool is not complete and not all options are available. It is possible to take a screenshot, but access to the editing tool seems complicated at the moment.
