The list is growing, and could soon include electronic signing of PDFs. Clues gleaned from the source code of Chrome Canary, the unstable version of the browser, suggest the development of a functionality allowing you to add your signature to PDF documents.
Towards a native electronic signature on Google Chrome?
The vast majority of Internet users use Google Chrome, and one of the most requested options concerns the possibility of signing our PDF documents without having to leave the browser or use online services that are not always very engaging. Do not hesitate to consult our folder dedicated to free software. Chrome Canary explorers have just offered a glimmer of hope to all those waiting for this feature by noticing an experimental flag. The latter was more specifically spotted by @Leopeva64 (account X), an observer recognized by the community for his reliability.
Once activated and the browser restarted, we notice that users are able to “handwritten” sign their PDFs, and without resorting to third-party software. For the moment, this functionality is not yet active and its final implementation remains to be confirmed. Google regularly tests many options, which sometimes do not even pass the experimental stage. Even entering beta does not guarantee widespread access to everyone.
Google wants to catch up with the competition
If the electronic signature of PDFs is an expected new feature on Chrome, it is not a revolution. Competing browsers, like Microsoft Edge, already offer powerful annotation tools, including electronic signature, eraser, highlighter and other features.
As it stands, Chrome is just catching up. More annotation features are expected to follow, making the built-in PDF reader a more comprehensive tool. The development of an enriched and more flexible PDF reader for users is not limited to the desktop version of Chrome.
Last February, other flags suggested the arrival of the PDF reader on the Android, therefore mobile, version of the browser.
Ideally, stable version 126 could integrate it, but additional development cycles may be necessary before it is released to the general public. In the meantime, remember that Google Chrome 124 has recently been available with a whole bunch of new features.
