Google Drive finally gets a dark mode, but there is still a long way to go

Google Drive is the latest application from the Mountain View company to offer a dark mode to its users. When this is available, a message appears when you go to the platform to invite you to test this new theme. A great step forward for Google, which is still very late on this point.

Google Drive is certainly one of the most regularly updated Google apps. Logical, since it is one of the most used, particularly by professionals via the Workspace suite. The latest update is part of this continuity which aims to make life easier for users, by allowing files to be labeled in order to find them more easily. But by focusing on improving its services, Google sometimes forgets to work on their aesthetics.

Also, the firm’s applications are lagging behind in the deployment of a dark mode. While the latter has become the standard on many websites and applications, it is still very rare in the Google ecosystem. It is only found on Maps, Search, Keep and Chat. We are therefore a long way from total coverage, although this gap will soon be reduced.

Dark mode finally comes to Google Drive

Indeed, our colleagues at 9to5Google report that dark mode is now being deployed on Google Drive. We haven’t yet been able to see it at the Phonandroid editorial office, so it may only be available to a handful of users at present. When this is the case, Google Drive displays a pop-up inviting the user to activate dark mode.

Then simply click on the gear wheel then go to Settings > General > Appearance and select dark mode. Note that this section will not be available until the new theme is deployed to your account. Moreover, dark mode is quite classic in that it applies a dark gray color to the entire interface and transforms the text into white.

Unfortunately, only Google Drive is entitled to this treatment. Just open any file to realize that Google Docs, Sheets and Slides do not yet have the dark theme. Let’s hope it doesn’t take too long to arrive.
