Installing the recent Android feature update on Pixels, and installing the latest security patch rolled out by Google, has caused problems for some devices. Identified last week, in particular on Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a5G, and Pixel 5, a bug blocked contactless payment by displaying a notification window. The latter then mentioned a concern for software compatibility.

Your phone does not meet software standards. You cannot pay contactless with this device. It may be rooted or running uncertified software. Contact your device manufacturer or see Google Pay Help for more information. “, could we read on the impacted models.

A problem solved fairly quickly by Google

As pointed out 9to5Google, the problem was mainly observed among users with a stable version of Android… and not the latest beta, for example. It was unclear, however, how widespread this bug was within the Pixel device fleet.

A particularly annoying bug, however, since it blocked access to stored cards for NFC payments. For a few days, the impacted users were therefore forced to return to physical cards.

Contacted by 9to5Google About this anomaly, Google responded in the best possible way: by deploying a fix. Released since yesterday, the latter corrects a priori the problem on all affected smartphones.

We are aware that some Pixel users have experienced an inability to make contactless payments using Google Pay following a recent update“, soberly commented the Mountain View giant. “This issue has been resolved and all users should be able to continue using Google Pay to make contactless payments wherever accepted“.
