GOOGLE MAPS
If you open Google Maps and navigate to Africa, you’ll see a strange blue bump in Libya. Reddit users think that this is where “Sauron’s Eye” rises from the earth.
It seems to be staring at you, the mysterious “blue eye”. Reddit user SilhoueX has spotted something straight out of a Lord of the Rings series via Google Maps and Google Earth near Libya’s eastern border: a giant eyeball in the middle of the desert.
Under the post, several Reddit users jokingly write that this is probably “Sauron’s eye”. Some are trying to take a more serious approach, believing they see volcanic activity in the rock formation. Others think because of the blue color that we are looking at an exposed underground lake.
What is really behind “Sauron’s Eye”?
To see the phenomenon for yourself, you have to enter the following coordinates in Google Maps: 24.2363306, 24.5219241 and then activate the satellite view. Alternatively, you can use Apple Maps or Google Earth.

Curiosities in Google Maps
A clear explanation for the “Big Black Eye”, as the Reddit user SilhoueX has christened it, is not found under the post. A look at the location description on Google Maps reveals the answer: it is part of the Kufra oases, a group of oases in south-east Libya. A similar curiosity was also sighted in the Taklamakan desert: a black hole.
