Google continues to evolve its Google Messages messaging application. After announcing a first burst of new features, the Mountain View firm is currently testing a simpler way to react to missives. Spotted in the latest beta version of the application by the 9to5Google site, this new feature was designed to speed up the process of reacting to messages.
Currently, just tap and hold on a message and a pop-up window opens with a selection of reaction emojis. This method can seem tedious, especially when you want to react quickly to information. Especially since the long press also opens a menu allowing you to copy or delete the selected message.
In the 20240208_00_RC00 beta of the application, several lines of code referring to a “double_tap_to_react” function were seen. A mention which suggests that users will soon be able to do a simple double tap to open the emoji reactions menu. This manipulation, already used in other messaging applications such as Messenger and Instagram, would allow smoother interaction during a conversation.
In addition to this feature, 9to5Google also discovered a new feature in the code concerning the integration of generative AI in Google Messages. The mention “Bard” was replaced by “Gemini”, the new name of the Californian giant’s AI tool. The application should therefore quickly make it possible to obtain suggested answers, translate texts or exchange with Google’s AI during a conversation.
