Samsung and Google seem to be having trouble talking to each other. Numerous bugs affect the application Google Messagesparticularly when it comes to reaching a recipient equipped with a Samsung smartphone.

It’s been several years since Samsung and Google joined forces to democratize the RCS standard, supposed to replace the antiquated SMS protocol. But this does not seem to be completely without difficulty. As noted by the SamMobile site, text messages sent from the Google Messages app often seem to get lost when it comes to finding their way to a Samsung smartphone, and vice versa.

Temporary solutions

It appears more specifically that missives exchanged between the Google Messages application on one side and Samsung Message on the other tend to be automatically converted into SMS even though both software supports the RCS standard. As a result, advanced features such as emoji reactions, sending attachments in original quality or sending audio messages are unavailable.

The problem has not yet received an official reaction, either from Samsung or Google. It must be said that the bug seems difficult to pin down, with certain conversations switching, for no apparent reason, between RCS and SMS according to testimonies collected on Reddit.

Tutorials / Tips

It seems that the problem exclusively affects people using Samsung Messages since switching to the Google Messages app, even on a Samsung smartphone, would resolve the problems. But the problem could also come from the RCS servers operated by Samsung and Google which would have difficulty talking to each other properly. Some Internet users also explain that they solved the problem by deleting the data and cache of the Samsung Messages application (Settings, Applications, Samsung Messages, Storage space and cache).

A problem for the democratization of the RCS

If the technical solutions to remedy the problem are not too complex, they still have the disadvantage of not being obvious to everyone. As a result, the RCS protocol, designed to be an invisible and interoperable replacement for SMS, is still limited in its compatibility between different devices. Enough to further reduce its usefulness, for the general public, compared to instant messaging applications such as Signal, WhatsApp, Telegram and others.

Until the teething problems of the protocol are resolved, it may be safer to use one of these services to stay in touch with loved ones. Hopefully, Apple’s adoption of RCS will put more eyes and brains into the effective democratization of RCS.
