The Web giant has established partnerships with several major players in the French press to offer quality articles, chosen by publishers.

Relations between the French press and Google have been tumultuous, and the search engine now seems to want to ease the tensions with the launch of Google News Showcase, two years after its official announcement.

A selection of articles produced by each partner press title

This new section has been added to Google News, in the form of a new tab. Available on the web version of Google, Google News Showcase is also available on mobile on iOS and Android, as well as in the Google and Google News mobile applications on these two platforms, as well as on Google Discover.

Google News Showcase comes in the form of a carousel featuring three articles from a particular news title.

For the launch in France of its new service, the American company joined forces with several major titles and press groups such as Le Figarothe Rossel-La Voix group, 20 minutesthe EBRA Group, The Parisian or The Team, The Express and Provence. Google explains that it has signed a total of 65 publishers and will offer content from more than 130 press titles.

Google will pay publishers to offer you articles that are usually paid for

The articles presented on Google News Showcase are chosen by the editorial staff of each press title, and are not proposed according to the tastes of the users or their favorite subjects.

Google also offers free access to some of the content, normally protected by a paywall. The search engine will pay the editors for each paid article offered to its users. For press groups, these articles will be like a showcase of their work, and will thus allow them to convince other readers to subscribe to access all the content published daily.

The American company thus hopes to pacify its historically conflicting relations with the French press, which accused the Web giant of making profits on their backs, without remunerating the editorial staff or sharing the advertising revenues garnered. The search engine had been forced by the Competition Authority to pay editorial staff for the reruns of their articles in Google News, before signing commercial agreements with various press groups.
