The folding smartphone market is becoming more democratic and Google should soon get into the dance with its Pixel Fold. In any case, this is indicated by the FrontPageTech site, which has just released various detailed 3D renderings of the device. Rumors have been suggesting the development of such a model in-house for a while now, but the Mountain View company did not mention it when the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro were released.

The firm has obviously kept some on hand for the next Google I/O conference scheduled for May 2023. We should thus discover the Pixel Tablet, but also this model in booklet format, in the wake of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 .

The renderings allow you to get a good idea of the final design, and look very realistic. We remind you, however, that this information must be taken with a grain of salt, the source of the site remaining unknown.

On familiar ground

In the photos, we see that this Pixel Fold does not contrast with the rest of the range and sports a massive design. It therefore does not look like one of the lightest. We notice the presence of a large photo island, as on Mountain View smartphones, even if it does not go from one end to the other of the back of the device.

There doesn’t seem to be any vacant space between the two parts of the screen when folded down, which means the hinge must be quite imposing. The power button hosts a fingerprint reader.

The FrontPageTech source explains that one can expect an experience “pixel-worthy” in picture. We would therefore not be surprised to find a configuration similar to a Pro model, based on a triple module. This would allow Google to take a certain advantage on the subject, since this type of model has never really excelled in photography among the competition.

The photo island is reminiscent of the rest of the Pixel 7 range.

For selfies, it will be necessary to reckon with the 9.5 megapixel front sensor housed in a notch located on the external screen. When opened, a similar module sits in the top border. The latter also seems wider than on the Samsung model or the Oppo Find N.

There are wide borders surrounding the internal screen.

No information specifies the SoC supposed to animate everything, but it is reasonable to think that the latest in-house chip, the Tensor G2, will be at work.

The right price ?

According to the site, the Pixel Fold would cost $1,799, the same price as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 when it launched in the United States last August.

A price certainly high, which nevertheless seems consistent in view of the market (and inflation). It remains to be seen whether Samsung or Oppo (and its Find N2) will be able to offer more affordable competition.
