The Pixel 6 (surprisingly) does not go with Android 14 © Pierre Crochart for Clubic

There are some bugs that are more annoying than others. Android 14the brand new version of the mobile OS with the little green robot, erases all data on certain Pixel phones, including the Pixel 6. But Google has promised a fix.

Deploying a major new operating system update is never fun. Google learned this again with the release of Android 14. Even if the latest version of the OS corrects overheating issues, it also caused some bugs on the Pixel 6 (and possibly other phones made in Google) . Very serious, these problems can go so far as to simply erase the data from a phone in perfect working order.

How to avoid data loss?

This would particularly concern mobiles which have several user accounts installed on the same device. From a simple crash to erasing an entire partition, Android 14 therefore seems to have some problems. Good news though, Google is on the case.

In a message posted on the Google forums on October 30, 2023, the company explains that it has become aware of a problem which may, depending on the device, “cause the primary user to be unable to access media storage” Or “cause the device to restart with a “factory data reset” message.»

According to the search giant, a fix has already been pushed via Google Play to “prevent this issue from being triggered on other devices“. To verify that the latest Google Play update is installed, go to the “Settings” applicationselect “Security and confidentiality” Then ” Update “ then choose “Google Play System Update”. From there, you should be able to install the latest update offered by Google.

You will have to be patient

If the bug is less severe and simply prevents you from accessing media storage, an upcoming update “will repair the problem and restore access to media files without the need for a system reset.» Same thing if your mobile is stuck on the screen «Your Pixel starts“. We will therefore have to be patient (and potentially with a second phone) while waiting for Google to deploy a large-scale patch.

For those who have already lost data, however, no luck. Google just advises “avoid creating or logging in to a secondary user on the device”, but does not give any advice for recovering potentially deleted files. A painful reminder of the fact that updating your system in the first days of availability is often synonymous with bugs and problems of all kinds.

Google Pixel 6

  • Very nice screen…
  • Google Tensor performance
  • The best camera phone at this price level

If photography is your thing, let’s not waste a moment to declare that under 650 euros, you won’t find anything better than the Google Pixel 6. Thanks to its new sensor and its more precise algorithms than ever, it offers stunning images, no matter what scenario we present to him.

But everything is not rosy, and the Pixel 6 escapes the maximum score for several points. First for its design, both dated and a little crude. Then, even if it is excellent, the Pixel 6 screen is capped at 90 Hz. A frequency which is hardly used anymore except by Google, or entry-level manufacturers. Charging is also a little slow, the front photo sensor is dated and the ultra-wide angle is quite limited.

Despite everything, the Pixel 6 remains a very intuitive, solid smartphone that ultimately offers everything you could want in a mid/high-end smartphone. Add to this the software support guaranteed over five years, and we are not far from having the best Android smartphone launched in this segment this year. A success.
