Google Sheets is enriched with AI, but you will have to pay to use it

2023 is the year of AI, and if you’re a regular Google Sheets user, you’ll soon get AI-powered support. But only if you are willing to pay for it.

Google Sheets is the free spreadsheet of the office suite developed by Google, accessible from a Google Drive account or from the mobile application for Android and iOS.

Several years ago, Google added a “smart fill” feature to Sheets that automatically learns what the user types regularly and predicts and automatically fills in what comes next. For example, if a user is working with two columns of names, “Smart Fill” can learn that it is transferring names from one column to the other and automatically fill in the rest.

Today, Google is rolling out the “Enhanced Smart Fill” feature. Unfortunately, this feature is only available to Google Duet subscribers who are willing to pay $30 per month.

Automatic detection of relationships between data contained in cells

This feature, announced by the company in a “Workspace Updates” blog post, is designed to help users spend less time manually organizing and analyzing data in Sheets. It joins other AI features in Google Workplace, such as Help Me Write for Google Docs and Help Me Organize for Sheets.

Using AI, Sheets will now automatically detect if there is a relationship between data in cells. If so, Duet will make a “contextual suggestion” and ask if you want to accept the new values. For now, Google says improved smart fill will help format addresses, structure phone numbers and emails, condense text, and more.

Google demonstrated some examples of this technology, pointing out that a sales team could use it to more easily organize the next steps in a sales cycle instead of manually extracting the next steps from notes in a column, or that a charity could use it to write personalized thank you notes for donors based on their donation type.

Enhanced Smart Fill is automatically enabled in Google Sheets and should be available now to all Duet users.
