After years of prohibiting the simultaneous downloading of several apps, Google finally opens the floodgates of its Play store. Enough to improve the software experience on Android.

If you’ve ever tried to reinstall all your favorite apps on your new Android phone, you’ve probably already encountered a major problem: the inability to download multiple apps at once from the Play Store. This limit, present since the beginnings of Android, previously created a “queue” with all the apps to be installed which only moved once the first in the list had finished being downloaded. But this is finally changing.

A welcome, but limited feature

As noted by the specialized site 9to5Google, on the latest versions of the Play Store, it is now possible to download several apps simultaneously. A long-awaited novelty. If you install Google Docs and Google Sheet for example, you no longer need to wait for the first to finish installing to start downloading the second, the two processes can be carried out in parallel.

Unfortunately, Google has seriously limited this functionality since it is only possible to download 2 software at a time. If you try to obtain a third, it will be put in a “queue” as before, unlike the Apple App Store which allows you to manage up to three simultaneous installations.

Service comparisons

Even more stupid, this new feature does not apply to updates. The button “Update all» in the Play Store still only downloads one app at a time, which can create a long wait if you have more than a handful of apps asking to upgrade to a newer version. This limits the usefulness of this system since application updates are still more frequent than downloading new software.

Archaic restrictions

No doubt, for the moment, Google is deploying this functionality in small steps to identify possible bugs or problems that it could cause, particularly on less powerful phones and tablets. But restricting the use of the Play Store to this extent in 2024 is surprising as less powerful computers than our current phones are capable of downloading several software programs without a hitch.

Let’s hope that the company opens the floodgates more widely in the coming weeks, because this could greatly facilitate the lives of those who have dozens and dozens of apps on their phones and who never see the end of their lists software to update.
