As ChatGPT grabs the spotlight, Google’s AI creeps into hospitals.
In the war over which of Bard or ChatGPT offers the best AI, Google has taken a bit of a lead over Microsoft, at least in the field of health. Indeed, an article from The Wall Street Journal shows us how the Mountain View firm managed to interfere in American hospital services, with some success.

Clinical trials are already underway in several American clinics and hospitals with Google’s large Med-PaLM 2 language model. As its name suggests, this AI specializes in the medical field. The scientific equivalent of consumer chatbots such as Bard and ChatGPT is in its second iteration and should, according to Google, “reach a 86.5% accuracy on exam questions American awarding the doctor’s degree, i.e. a 19% jump compared to Med-PaLM results”.

All these results remained theoretical. Google wanted to confront its technology to the test of reality. The firm has offered Med-PaLM 2 to several hospital departments Americans. The idea of this AI is not to replace doctors, but to make their lives easier. It has the ability to summarize a large quantity of documents very quickly and to present the data in a format that is easier for scientists to “digest”. Moreover, according to Google officials, it would be particularly beneficial in “medical deserts”those countries or regions in which there are few, if any, health professionals.
Is it the door open to self-medication? Very likely, because according to experts, Med-PaLM 2 also generates “accurate and useful answers to consumer health questions”. The drift is therefore possible, but that does not stop the giants of Silicon Valley, for whom the health sector is extremely buoyant. Microsoft is also working on an AI specialized in medicine, based on ChatGPT, the AI of all records. We should therefore not be long in hearing news from the Redmond firm in this area.
