“GPT-4.5 Turbo”: the rumor of the next evolution of ChatGPT resurfaces

Rumors have emerged again about the future of ChatGPT. After indications suggesting the release of a GPT-4.5, Internet users think they have found clues about a GPT-4.5 Turbo. But the elements presented struggle to convince.

This is a new rumor that emerged on social networks in mid-March, but also on the official OpenAI forum. The American company would have a new version of ChatGPT in the works. There was reportedly an unfortunate “leak” on the company’s official website, regarding the blog post about “GPT-4.5 Turbo”.

A discussion thread appeared on Reddit on March 12, in the section devoted to OpenAI news. An Internet user, Chika1472, claims to have found a clue on the search engines DuckDuckGo and Microsoft Bing. With a query “OpenAI blog gpt-4.5 turbo”, an OpenAI web page confirming this version would exist.

We were unable to find the URL visible in the screenshot shared by Chika1472. In it, it is written that OpenAI announces GPT-4.5 Turbo, a new model that surpasses GPT-4 in speed, precision and scalability. Further, after technical indications, it is indicated that its knowledge is up to date as of June 2024.

This is where the main problem lies. It is temporal: GPT-4.5 Turbo cannot, in March 2024, claim knowledge that extends until mid-2024, unless it has precognitive gifts. So did OpenAI just get it wrong? This post may have been intended for publication in the 2nd half of 2024, and an error caused it to be released too early.

The fact is, however, that nothing can be found on the official website. The most recent message is from March 8 and concerns the addition of new people to the OpenAI board of directors. We can’t find anything on the Internet Archive either, although the platform has recent copies of the OpenAI site, in particular its page bringing together all its announcements.

The various captures offered by OpenAI do not show anything that would go in the direction of what Chika1472 says he saw. Numerama has verified all snapshots taken since March 1. There is also no mention elsewhere on the OpenAI website of a “GPT-4.5 Turbo”, except for a question on the forum wondering if the leak is real.

On Reddit and on the forum, Internet users struggle to believe this model. “ Certainly rubbish. I check the blog every 15 minutes, so if it had been updated with a post about GPT-4.5-Turbo, I most likely would have noticed it », assures Elmstedt for example. Others also point out this temporal inconsistency.

Already rumors about the future of ChatGPT at the end of 2023

A few months ago, ChatGPT was already the subject of rumors. It was then a question of the new GPT-4.5 model. This has not, to date, seen the light of day. When these rumors appeared in December 2023, several elements already seemed suspicious. It would therefore be curious to announce a “GPT-4.5 Turbo” while “GPT-4.5” still does not exist.

Today, the OpenAI chatbot received two major developments, each dating from 2023. There was the release of GPT-4 in March, then the arrival of GPT-4 Turbo in November. At the same time and since then, the conversational agent has received various updates, but on a modest scale. Nothing, in any case, which would justify the launch of a GPT-4.1, 4.2, 4.5 or even 5.

These rumors about the future of ChatGPT are pouring in at a time when chatbots are asserting themselves more by claiming to equal or exceed the performance of GPT-4 (or GPT-4 Turbo) in various tests. We have seen this since the end of 2023 with Gemini, Google’s conversational agent, but also Claude 3 from Anthropic or Le Chat from Mistral AI.
