  • The mother of an 18-year-old who threw her newborn in a garbage can stands behind her daughter.

  • She expresses herself in the media.

  • A custody battle has already broken out over the baby named Saul.

“People can talk and form their opinion, but everyone makes mistakes at one point or another,” says Martha Avila. “You can preach and judge however you want, but for us only one person’s judgment is important.” The 47-year-old defended her daughter to the Daily Mail, who was filmed last Friday as she had “disposed of” her newborn son in a dumpster in Hobbs, New Mexico.

It was only thanks to a group of people who were looking for valuables in the container six hours later and who initially believed they had heard a cat that the baby survived at temperatures of around one degree. The boy was taken to a hospital. Shortly afterwards, 18-year-old Alexis Avila was arrested. She has confessed and faces charges of attempted murder and child abuse. She is currently free on bail.

Alexis Avila had told the authorities that she had not noticed that she was expecting a child. However, she is said to have told friends at school about her pregnancy. The child’s father, 16-year-old Stephen Astorga, also knew his girlfriend was expecting a child but believed she had miscarried. In fact, Avila had given birth to the boy, now called Saul, in the bathroom of her parents’ house. Then she “panicked” and threw the child in the trash in the back yard of a shop. She was filmed by a surveillance camera.

Custody dispute for baby Saul?

The boy’s future is still unclear. Martha Avila would like baby Saul to come to her family, but the father of 16-year-old Stephen is determined to fight for him, as he tells the «Mail». “Of course we want to try to get custody,” said Oscar Astorga (50). “After all, he’s my grandson.” The family has now brought in a lawyer.

Although Astorga and his son Stephen did not know about the birth, they have received death threats in the meantime. “There are a lot of people on social media who threatened our families with death,” said Saul’s grandfather. “But we didn’t do anything wrong.” The young mother and son separated last August.
