Dune is a license that has gained popularity since its return to the big screen thanks to director Denis Villeneuve. In this context, the Spice Wars video game is particularly awaited.
Set in the legendary sci-fi universe created by Frank Herbert, Dune: Spice Wars transports players to the planet Arrakis. At the head of this 4X strategy game, we find the French from Shiro Games. For the record, they are already responsible for the excellent Northgard and Wartales. Their game has been in early access for over a year, but all good things must come to an end and now is the time to say goodbye.
A long-awaited release for Dune Spice Wars
Dune: Spice Wars offers asymmetrical gameplay with multiple playable factions, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Players can deploy agents to sabotage, assassinate and spy on their opponents, use political means to influence the Landsraad and pass beneficial resolutions, or crush other houses with their economic and technological superiority. In short, a 4X in the line of a Civilization VI, but with Dune sauce.
The good news is that the game is set to release from Early Access on Steam on September 14th. This full release will bring a sixth major update, introducing the wealthy and politically astute Maison Ecaz. House Ecaz reinforces the already fierce competition between the six factions for control of the spice, making the quest for power even more difficult.
For those who are in love with Herbert’s lore, know that House Ecaz is one of the Great Houses of the Imperium. She rules the planet Ecaz, which is known for its lush gardens and unique flora. This “nation” is often described as a home of poets, artists and thinkers. They are also known to have a particular interest in arts and culture. It is also famous for its progressive policy on human rights and democracy. In other words, it’s a bit like the Athenians of Dune.
