Greece: a major earthquake hits the north of the country


An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 occurred on Sunday January 16 in northern Greece, not far from the country’s second city, Thessaloniki.

The epicenter of the earthquake which occurred at 11:50 a.m. was located at sea 10 km deep and 23 km south-west of Mount Athos, a high place of Orthodoxy which is home to many monasteries.

No casualties or damage were reported immediately. Greece is located on several seismic faults and regularly experiences earthquakes.

In October 2020, a 7.0 earthquake hit the Aegean Sea, between the Greek island of Samos and the city of Izmir in western Turkey.
