Baerbock dares to become chancellor

Annalena Bearbock feels ready to take over the Chancellery if the Greens win the Federal Parliament election in 2021. But she also trusts her colleague Robert Habeck to do Angela Merkel's job, as she now emphasizes in an interview.

The Greens chairwoman Annalena Baerbock has made it clear that she considers herself suitable for the office of Federal Chancellor. "Yes, I also trust myself to be in the Chancellery," said Baerbock of "Bild am Sonntag". The same applies to her co-chairman Robert Habeck. You also trust "Robert Chancellor", stressed the Green leader.

With a view to the federal election next September, Baerbock announced that "we will decide together what is best for the country and our party". In contrast to Habeck, she does not see the lack of government experience as a problem. "For everyone who is currently under discussion, the following applies: Nobody fell from heaven as Chancellor," she emphasized. "Everyone should learn new things in office."

"Party leader, MP and mother"

Baerbock sees her current double burden as a top politician and mother as good preparation for the stress a head of government is exposed to. When asked whether she had the nerves, the stamina in negotiations, the psychological and physical strength for the Chancellery, she replied: "Yes, you need all of these factors. And believe me: three years as a party leader, member of parliament and mother of small children are steel quite."

With a view to the upcoming challenges, Baerbock strongly advocated a Green-led federal government after the election: industry must be converted to be climate-neutral, and social inequality tackled. "That's why we bring the Greens, that's what Robert brings, and that's why I bring the knowledge, the responsibility and the passion."
