A new industrial and energy era is opening in Brittany, where Lhyfe is opening one of the two largest green hydrogen production sites in the region.

There is no shortage of good news on the theme of hydrogen at the moment: between the immense Folschviller deposit and the start of exploration of a white hydrogen reserve in Béarn, the sector is accelerated. This time, it is in Buléon, in Morbihan, that the Lhyfe company inaugurated its green hydrogen production site. Its second after the one it holds in Occitanie. Soberly titled Lhyfe Bretagne, the latter opened its doors this Friday, December 15.

Lhyfe Bretagne: a regional and national commitment

This power plant is the first of its kind in the region, and is already one of the most important in France. The opening of this site is part of the Vallée Hydrogène Grand Ouest project, which aims to create a regional ecosystem to produce hydrogen. By 2026, Lhyfe hopes to see the production capacity of its facility rise to 80 tonnes daily.

Lhyfe Bretagne is also located near the VSB Energies Nouvelles wind farm, which allows it to benefit from constant electrolysis of 5 MW and produce up to two tonnes of hydrogen daily. On average, this would amount to an annual coverage of 575 tonnes. These figures are rather significant, when we consider that a single ton of hydrogen allows a truck to travel 25,000 km without any direct CO emissions.2.

To ensure this production, the plant relies on water electrolysis technology powered by electricity from renewable energy sources. According to Lhyfe’s promises, their hydrogen will therefore be entirely decarbonized. An innovative approach, undertaken with the Brittany region and Lorient Agglomération, which will be able to benefit from this new source of energy from next year.

Sustainable mobility and circular economy

Through its site, Lhyfe will power two refueling stations (operated by HyGO) with hydrogen in 2024, which will be used to recharge passenger boats and buses in local areas. One located in Lorient, and another on the left bank of the Scorff. In the Lorient area, there will be 19 buses and two boats that will ultimately run entirely on hydrogen. The first copies will be delivered in the first quarter of 2024. In public transport, this is a small revolution.

The other big advantage of the Lhyfe Bretagne site is its very compact, so-called “containerized” design. This allows both to limit its surface area, but also to allow an easier capacity to evolve the site according to needs. This extends over 6,800 m2 and includes:

  • Containerized buildings which can fulfill various functions: control room, quality control, reception of drivers, etc.
  • A circulation space for trucks.
  • Truck loading bays.

This news represents more the start of a new era of green energy for Brittany than the simple opening of yet another energy plant. The region thus finds itself in a strategic position in the production of carbon-free energy, at the same time joining Occitanie with Lhyfe as the initiator of these projects.
