While traveling to Minnesota to meet neurosurgeon David Hamilton (Peter Gallagher), who is none other than a former colleague of her mother Ellis who wants to make her a most surprising proposal, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) falls indeed face to face with Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman), a doctor whom she had treated in episode 17 of season 14.
This fortuitous meeting in a restaurant will lead to a drink in their hotel. And maybe more ? Scott Speedman, whom fans of Felicity, Last Resort, Animal Kingdom, You, or even The Strangers know well, joins the cast of the medical series in any case as a regular. And everything suggests that he is there to become Doctor Grey’s new lover.
Remember, Nick, a doctor specializing in transplantation, was introduced for an episode of season 14, in 2018. Came to recover a liver for a patient at Gray Sloan Hospital, Nick, himself recently transplanted kidney, passed out in the halls of the hospital and was treated by Meredith, who ended up saving his life.
The chemistry between Ellen Pompeo and Scott Speedman, but also between Meredith and Nick, was undeniable in this episode, and fans were therefore quick to dream of a romance between the two characters. And to claim the return of the ex-star of Felicity and Animal Kingdom. But in vain. Until last year.

The production of Grey’s Anatomy has indeed succeeded in keeping its return to the series secret until the broadcast of the first episode of season 18, aired on September 30 on the ABC channel across the Atlantic.
And as showrunner Krista Vernoff revealed to Deadline, the idea of bringing Nick back had been raised several times. A few phone calls had even been made to Scott Speedman and his agent, but the comedian was always unavailable due to a busy film and television schedule.
And it was finally at the end of season 17 that the showrunner and producer once again tried her luck. With the happy outcome that we know: “Towards the end of last season, I started saying to Ellen, ‘I have this idea…’, and her reaction was at first, ‘Again?!’, because I had already tried to bring him back a few times. But this time we were lucky, Scott said yes, and we were able to write the season accordingly.”.
It remains to be seen whether this possible love story between Meredith and Nick could be long-lasting since, for the moment, Scott Speedman is only hired for one season. Case to follow.
